listerine cool mint strips



I chose the listerine mint strips as my product bacause i used them and I wanted to find out what was in it. The three ingredients that i did my research on was Eucalyptol, Thymol, and Pullulan.

The chemical name for eucalyptol is 1,3,3-trimethyl-2-oxabicyclo[2.2.2]octane. The chemical formula for this ingredient is C10H18O. There are many health effects for eucalyptol. The health effects is that it’s hazardous on skin contact and inhalation. It has acute health effects on behavior, respiratory tract and nervous system. It can be toxic if ingested at higher than normal doses. It is also a reproductive toxin for females and a suspect reproductive toxin for males. Eculyptol is a natural compound. It is a cyclic ether and a monoterpenoid. The physical properties of eucalyptol are colorless liquid, spicy taste, and its boiling point is 176 degrees celsius. Eucalyptol is used in the listerine mint strips to give it a pleasant spicy aroma and taste.

The second ingredient is thymol. The chemical name for thymol is 2-isopropyl-5-methylphenol. The chemical formula is C10H14O. The health effects of thymol is irritation to the skin eyes and when inhaled. Thymol is a natural substance of thyme oil. The physical properties of thymol are colorless crystals or white crystalline powder and a pungent taste. It is also heavier than water, but when it’s a liquid it is lighter. The purpose of the ingredient is that thymol is used as a germ killer.

The third ingredient is pullulan. The chemical name for the ingredient is aureobasidium pullulans. The chemical formula for pullulan is (C6H12O5)n. The health effects of this ingredient is mutation that could lead to cancer. Thymol is produced from the starch of the fungus aureobasidium pullulans. The physical properties of pullulan is a tasteless white odorless powder. It is also less than 6% water. The reason why this ingredient is in the listerine mint strips is it taste inoffensive and it dissolves easily.

  1. I learned that thymol has many side effects such as it can cause skin and eye irritation when the it is inhaled.

  2. I learned that consuming too much eucalyptol is bad for both the male and female reproduction system.
    How much eucalyptol is used in each strip?
